The Bane of A Drain

Thanks to the age of technology, sorting out your drain problem could be cheaper and easier these days. Video inspections of drains and sewers lines that would normally need excavation can now be afforded with a video camera! If the city, or the neighbor, or over-flowing drains indicate that you need to replace a sewage line, or a section of one, it may be prudent to check by video first.

Often it is easy to check without digging down ten feet - but how annoying to dig down and find that you got it wrong! Video imaging may be the answer to  checking otherwise inaccessible pipelines.

The idea of having a sewage pipe back up or dealing with overflows in the bathroom is a common dread of most householders. The old adage 'prevention is better than cure' works well with domestic drains and many small, simple precautions can be taken that will cost nothing yet may save lots.

Keep your sink plugged! How simple is that? Rather than loose a ring or piece of jewelry down the drain, or have a child 'experiment' with pushing toys through your plug -hole, practice always keeping the plugs, drain filters etc in their place.  This even keep the cold air out of your bathroom in the winter!

Another small precaution is to keep a covered litter bin in your bathroom, this way only toilet tissue need be flushed away. Many other tissues, commercial wipes and face cleansing pads may not be as flushable as the manufacturers predict.

Finally, try and keep the bathroom door shut when you have little visitors. Children love to watch toys sink or float in that little play pool that you call the toilet bowl.

The build-up of normal bathroom junk that escapes into the sink can be dealt with bi-monthly. To eradicate an excess of  grease, soap, hair and scum it is advisable to use a drain cleaner every few weeks. This regular clean-up will not only keep your drainage efficient, it may stop a blockage from forming around  something foreign that has dropped down your drains.

Another tip to consider is the convenience of having a plunger to hand. If you notice that the water is emptying more slowly, sometimes a plunging action is all; that is needed. The quick and jerky changes in water pressure inside the pipe will often dislodge something that may be jammed.

Fine roots can worm their way through small cracks in your sewer line, and having a sharp little twig in your line  will make it easier for blockages to occur. This can be a problem that may eventually have to be dealt with if you plan to stay in the house. However, paying for a professional    dyna-rod company to clean your pipes every few years may buy you years of delay.
