Redecorating on a budget interior decorating
Your home and your décor

So youve been meaning to brighten up that nook in your Austin home or turn an idle corner into a home centerpiece. You probably wish that the living room will be more an expression of your personal style rather than just the cold space for the couch and the TV. Or a guest room may just have to be renovated or refurbished as you have holiday guests staying over. Caught between doing it yourself or calling in your nearest Austin, Texas contractor, wait a minute, step back, and assess your redecorating situation.

Redecorating on a budget

Redecorating is a fun job; unfortunately, the budgeting side may be not. If you are bent on redecorating your home, you may want to do it on a strict budget. You need to plan; planning can take away some of the budgeting fears and tears.

Define the extent of the redecorating when you plan. If you want to spruce up just the living room, make sure you dont leave the confines of that room in the redecorating. Do the simple measurements yourself so you have the general idea of the space you are sprucing up. You dont have to be an engineer or an architect to do a simple layout of the space you are redecorating to be able to see how many square meters of floor area you need to cover, how many square feet of wallpaper you need to cover the walls, how much knocking down and building up will be required. Go online for measuring and lay-outing tips; there are tools available and downloadable to help you plan the redecorating.

Start with what you have; dont just start throwing away good furniture and fixtures. Whatever is still usable, still attractive, and can be re-fitted or re-designed yourself, mean only one thing savings on your redecorating budget. All you need is a little common sense and creativity to see the use of the old and turn it into something exciting and new.

Unless you plan to do a complete make-over, you can simply move furniture or fixtures from one area of your Austin home to the room you are redecorating. Plan to do the minor painting or wall-papering job yourself. The moldings on the base boards you can also apply yourself. Changing that ceiling pin-lamp is easy: there is no need to get an electrician to do it for you.

After youve made the best of what you have available, now you can buy the other pieces. Buying new furniture or fixture, though, need not be expensive if you know where to hunt for bargains. Be ready to buy second-hand, used items. Youd be surprised to see great finds in garage sales and thrift, bargain stores and flea markets. For really brand-new items, check out clearance sales or building contractors sales of previously used furniture for their showrooms. And wait; check out your friends or neighbors, too, as they may want to barter furniture or accessories if theyre also planning on redecorating.
